Things That Are Toxic To Cats

March is Poison Prevention Month! This is a very important topic for cat owners, as thousands—perhaps millions—of our feline pals ingest toxic substances each year. It’s easy to forget that kitties don’t know what is and isn’t safe for them! A Bucks County, PA vet lists some things that are toxic to Fluffy in this article.

Antifreeze

Antifreeze is one of the bigger hazards here. It’s extremely dangerous to cats. Unfortunately, many of them like its taste. Use pet-friendly brands, and take care of spills right away. You can pour sand or kitty litter on damp spots for further protection.

Lilies

Lilies also make the list, as they can be deadly to your furry friend. Of course, they aren’t the only unsafe plants. Azaleas, rhododendrons, tulips, and daffodils are just a handful of the other ones that are poisonous. You can find more information at the ASPCA site here.

Our Snacks

Cats’ digestive systems are quite different from ours. Many of the things that are fine for us are toxic to our feline friends! Some of the more dangerous options include chocolate; alcohol; dairy products; avocados; garlic, onions, scallions, and chives; caffeine; grapes, currants, and raisins; and anything containing xylitol and/or a lot of salt, sugar, or fat.

Medicine

Kitties aren’t quite as likely to gobble on a pill bottle as dogs, but it’s still best to play it safe. Both prescription and OTC meds are toxic to Fluffy. Keep these out of paws’ reach!

Essential Oils

Aromatherapy has become quite popular in recent years. However, because these oils are so highly concentrated, they’re quite powerful, and can be poisonous to kitties. Some of the more dangerous ones include wintergreen, ylang ylang, peppermint, clove, cinnamon, pine, and tea tree oils.

Salt Lamps

Himalayan salt lamps give off a very cozy and relaxing glow. However, if you get one, you’ll need to put it in a spot that your furball can’t reach. Some cats will lick these, which can lead to salt poisoning.

Household Chemicals

Many of the chemicals you’ll find in an average household are also poisonous to Fluffy. This includes automotive products, cleaning agents, and lawn/garden products, such as herbicides and fertilizer. Keep any and all chemicals in secure cabinets.
